Each semester, scholars will read a book from the One Maryland One Book collection. In addition, scholars will read a wide variety of articles, short stories, and essays.


Completing an essay for college applications is just one of the key writing goals we will pursue. Scholars will write narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive essays.


Grammar is the study of words, how they are used in sentences, and how they change in different situations. It is the study of sentence structure and rules relating to how language should be used. English is not an easy language especially if it's a second language or not the primary language spoken at home.


A robust vocabulary improves all areas of communication — listening, speaking, reading and writing. Vocabulary is critical to a scholar's success for these reasons: ... Vocabulary helps scholars to think and learn about the world. Expanding a knowledge of words provides unlimited access to new information.
